A Place to Call Home
Inclusive Housing Initiative

Young Adults Housing.png
Many adults with disabilities live with aging caregivers who worry about the future every day. We are working to change that.

Access to safe, affordable, and inclusive housing is one of the greatest challenges facing people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in South Carolina. Too many individuals remain on waiting lists, live with aging caregivers, or lack options that support independence and full participation in community life. Families across the state are asking the same urgent question… what will happen in the future?

The Arc of South Carolina’s Inclusive Housing Initiative works to expand community-based housing opportunities that promote stability, choice, and long-term independence. Through education, advocacy, and strategic partnerships, we help families plan ahead, support policies that increase accessible housing, and advance solutions that make inclusive living possible.

Because having a place to call home is more than shelter… it is the foundation for dignity, security, and belonging.

The Need

South Carolina faces a growing shortage of safe, affordable, and inclusive housing for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Many adults live with aging caregivers who worry about what will happen when they can no longer provide support. Others remain on long waiting lists or struggle to find housing that allows them to live independently while still receiving the services they need.

Too often, housing options are limited, unaffordable, or do not truly support community inclusion. Without intentional planning and investment, individuals and families are left with uncertainty instead of security.

Our Vision

The Arc of South Carolina believes every person deserves the opportunity to live in a safe home, make choices about their daily life, and be part of their community.

Our vision is a South Carolina where people with disabilities have real housing options… not just placements… but homes that support independence, dignity, and long-term stability.

What We’re Doing

Through the Inclusive Housing Initiative, The Arc of South Carolina is working to expand opportunities and remove barriers by:

• Advocating for policies that increase accessible and affordable housing
• Educating individuals and families about housing planning and options
• Building partnerships with housing developers, providers, and community leaders
• Supporting long-term planning for families navigating future housing decisions
• Promoting innovative housing models that prioritize independence and inclusion

Why Housing Matters

Housing is more than a place to live… it is the foundation for health, safety, employment, relationships, and community participation.

When people with disabilities have stable and inclusive housing, they can live with greater independence, build meaningful connections, and plan for the future with confidence.

Housing stability changes lives… not just for individuals, but for entire families.

“We have been searching for something like this for years… honestly, decades. As parents of an adult with a disability, the question of housing has always been there — quietly in the background, but always heavy. What will happen when we can’t be there every day? Where will our child live? Will they be safe… included… happy?

For so long, it felt like no one was really addressing those questions in a meaningful way. When we learned that The Arc of South Carolina was taking the initiative to focus on inclusive housing, it was the first time we felt genuine hope. Even knowing that this work is just beginning means everything to families like ours. It tells us someone is finally paying attention… finally planning… finally working toward real solutions.

We are deeply grateful that this conversation is happening and that this effort is moving forward. It gives our family something we haven’t had in a long time… peace of mind and hope for the future.”
