Are you a person with an intellectual or developmental disability, a family member or caregiver? Are the logistics of grocery shopping stressful for you, or do you struggle to find the time to get to the store as often as you’d like to keep fresh, healthy food in the house? Walmart is launching a new grocery pickup program, and they have been talking with The Arc about how this service may help take some of the stress out of grocery shopping for people with disabilities and their families.

Whether you only need a few things, or you actually need several things but only have a few minutes to get them, sometimes getting in and out of the store and getting everything packed in the car makes it hard to fit shopping into your already hectic schedule. Walmart is rolling out its new grocery pickup program in communities across the country during 2016. Through this new program, you simply shop online for groceries and then choose a time to have them handed to you (or better yet, loaded into your trunk) at a participating Walmart location.

Walmart added this service because their customers continually asked for it. Walmart tested online grocery options – both pickup and delivery – in a handful of markets across the U.S., and each time the company added a new city, customers begin using the service faster than they did in the previous one. Free pickup in particular has been very popular.

Customers can simply shop their grocery lists online, choose a time to pick up their orders and then pull in to a designated parking area at their local stores, where associates will load the items into their cars. It’s all the convenience of a specially trained personal shopper, at the exact same prices as your normal shopping. There are no extra fees or charges; and you can place an order [by10am] and pick it up the very same day.

With 70% of the U.S. population living within 5 miles of an existing Walmart store, this is an idea that can benefit many people. Anyone with a busy schedule – including people with I/DD, or their families and caregivers-- can shop online and choose the pickup time that works for them. In the weeks and months ahead, Walmart is adding even more stores and markets to the list of pickup locations.
