Give Back Logo

Donate your time and give back by helping adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities that may not have the resources to experience inclusive recreational and social activities in the community or resources to hire someone to perform certain tasks.  The Arc guarantees a return on your investment! Your contribution whether time, talent or treasure will make a difference in the lives of people with developmental disabilities in so many ways.

Whether you are a business leader, school teacher, civil servant, involved parent, or just someone who cares what happens in your hometown, there is always a way to give back to your community.   Please see below for additional information and ways that you can help.

Just Friends

As a business, social group, or individual you can sponsor an adult or group home of adults with special needs.  Sponsorship involves providing companionship and opportunities for adults with cognitive, intellectual and developmental disabilities to experience inclusive recreational and social activities in the community.  This can be anything from going to a movie, arts and craft activities, taking a walk in the mall, bowling – the sky is the limit on activities you can provide and the great memories and experiences you can share.

People on the Go (POGO)

POGO is a self advocacy group started in 1991 and is one the first groups of its kind in South Carolina.  The membership is made up of more than 60 adults with special needs living in Richland and Lexington counties.   Meetings are held the second Monday of each month to discuss issues affecting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  Guest speakers are needed to make presentations that provide information about opportunities available for those with special needs and to offer instructions on how POGO members can get actively involved in the community.  Topics concerning safety, health/hygiene, and individual development and confidence building skills are also great!  New ideas/topics welcomed.

Project Wheels – Volunteer Transportation Program

In the spirit or “neighbor helping neighbor” this program serves the transportation needs of those who are developmentally disabled.  If you can provide transportation (vehicles or driver(s) to help persons with disabilities achieve inclusion in their communities and to attend medical appointments, get groceries, or participate in community functions, etc. this would help with a critical community need.

Home Sweet Home

Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities would greatly appreciate assistance with making their house a home.  This can be assisting them to decorate/set up their living space, preparing a home cooked meal, planting some flowers or any activity that will make their space “home sweet home.”

Get Fit - Don’t’ Quit!

If you have experience with fitness, exercise, or healthy lifestyle programs and can share some time with local group homes to provide simple stretching/exercise sessions or education/training, this program is for you.   Opportunities of this nature for adults with special needs are extremely limited and needed in the community.

Handsome “GS”” and Diva “QueenS

If you specialize in hair care/styling, cosmetics, skin care or similar fields, you can sponsor an individual or group home of adults with special needs and coordinate to provide a day of pampering!   Something as simple as painting nails or providing skin care information would be greatly appreciated!

Celebration Station

As a business, social group, or an individual you can sponsor an individual or group home of adults with special needs to provide a birthday card, flowers, or cake for their special day or other special occasions.

Create your own way of giving!

Novel ideas and approaches to assisting adults living with intellectual and developmental disabilities in your community are also welcomed!
